Prominent Ear Surgery

Ear shape and position have a standard although individual variations may exist. Some people may have a very protruding ear giving them almost an ape-like appearance. This can be corrected through a surgical procedure. Ideally, the correct age is as early as possible. This surgery has been done safely even in 4-year-olds. In India, usually patients come at an adult age seeking a cosmetic solution for same. The first step involves a consultation with a qualified surgeon. During this consultation, you can discuss your concerns about your ears and your desired outcomes. The surgeon will evaluate your ear anatomy and overall health to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. Otoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the patient's preference. The surgeon will make incisions behind the ear or within the natural folds of the ear to minimize visible scarring. The surgeon will reshape the cartilage and possibly remove excess tissue to achieve the desired appearance. They will reposition the ears closer to the head if they protrude significantly. After the reshaping is complete, the surgeon will use sutures to close the incisions and apply bandages to protect the ears during the initial healing period. The recovery period typically involves wearing a protective headband or dressing over the ears for a few weeks to support the healing process and maintain the new ear shape. Patients are generally advised to avoid activities that could put pressure on the ears during this time. Over time, as the swelling subsides and the healing progresses, the final results of the otoplasty become more apparent. The goal is to achieve natural-looking, symmetrical, and proportionate ears that are in harmony with the rest of the facial features.

Gold Implant

An eye gold implant, also known as a Gold-weight eyelid implant or Gold eyelid implant, is a medical device used to treat a condition known as lagophthalmos. Lagophthalmos is a medical condition where the eyelids cannot fully close over the eyes, leaving the cornea and other structures exposed. This can lead to various issues, such as dry eyes, corneal damage, and an increased risk of eye infections. A gold implant is a small piece of gold that is surgically inserted into the upper eyelid. The purpose of the gold implant is to add weight to the eyelid, helping it close more effectively over the eye. When the eyelid is weighted, it can better protect the eye and maintain moisture on the cornea, reducing the symptoms and complications associated with lagophthalmos. The gold implant is often recommended when other non-surgical treatments, such as eye drops, eyelid taping, or botulinum toxin injections, have not provided sufficient relief. The procedure to insert a gold implant typically involves making a small incision in the upper eyelid and placing the gold implant within a pocket of tissue. Once the implant is in place, the incision is closed, and the eyelid begins to function with the added weight. It's important to note that the decision to undergo a gold implant procedure should be made in consultation with an ophthalmologist or an oculoplastic surgeon, as they can evaluate the individual's specific condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with a gold implant, and potential side effects or complications should be discussed with the treating healthcare professional.

Eyebrow Transplantation

Here's how the eyebrow transplantation process generally works: Donor Hair Extraction: The surgeon will first identify a suitable donor area on the patient's scalp, which usually has dense and healthy hair. Hair follicles are then extracted from this area using either the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) or FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method. FUT involves removing a strip of tissue from the donor area, while FUE involves extracting individual hair follicles one by one. Hair Follicle Preparation: Once the hair follicles are harvested, they are carefully dissected under a microscope to obtain individual hair grafts. These grafts are usually small units containing one to three hair follicles, which will be used for the transplantation. Recipient Site Creation: Tiny incisions are made in the area where the eyebrows will be reconstructed. The surgeon will create these recipient sites with precise angles and directions to ensure a natural-looking result. Hair Transplantation: The harvested hair grafts are then placed into the recipient sites with the help of microsurgical tools. The surgeon meticulously arranges the grafts to mimic the natural growth pattern and density of eyebrows. Recovery and Healing: After the procedure, patients may experience some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort in the transplanted area. However, these symptoms usually subside within a few days to a week. Patients are advised to follow post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing. Hair Growth: The transplanted hair will initially fall out within a few weeks of the procedure, which is a normal part of the process. However, the hair follicles remain intact, and new hair growth should start within a few months. It may take several months for the final results to become fully apparent.

Hair Transplantation

Hair loss is a normal physiologic process. The normal count for hair loss is somewhere between 50-100 hairs daily, females lose more than males. If the hair fall is more than that it may lead to the appearance of a bald patch earlier than the usual time. Such hair loss is termed ALOPECIA. A most common type of hair loss for men is Androgenic Alopecia; caused due to androgenic hormones like testosterone. Hair loss can not be stopped completely forget reversing it. The faster process of hair loss in affected patients can be slowed. Usually, hair loss stabilizes after some age. Although it is very difficult to accurately judge that. Alopecia can be treated with medications and non-surgical methods. Medications can stop the hair loss and even regrow lost hairs but patients need to be on medications life long which is not without side effects. Once the patient is used to the maintainence and have realistic expectations, Hair trasnplant surgery can be thought of. Hair transplant is not getting new hair!! It simply redistrubtes your existing hair such that appearence is near to normal. Result depends on many criteria like how many hairs area actually available. Hair tansplant surgery can be done in two ways FUT: in which a strip of the scalp tissue is cut, the hair follicles are removed from the strip and subsequently put in the bald areas. FUE: in which single hair follicles are removed with punches and subseuqnetly put in the bald areas. We at MJF will first accurately diagnose if you are a candidate for Hair Transplant/Hair Restoration surgery. We prefer FUE type of Hair transplant as it gives more predictable results and is less invasive.

Jaw Implants

Jaw implants, also known as mandibular implants or jawline implants, are a type of facial augmentation procedure used to enhance the size and shape of the lower jaw. These implants are typically made from biocompatible materials, such as silicone or porous polyethylene, and are designed to create a more defined and balanced jawline. The procedure involves placing the implants through incisions made either inside the mouth or under the jawline. The surgeon then carefully positions the implants on the sides of the jawbone to achieve the desired aesthetic result. Jaw implants are often used to correct congenital jaw deficiencies, asymmetry, or to create a more masculine or chiseled appearance in individuals seeking a stronger jawline. Before considering jaw implants or any facial augmentation procedure, it's essential to consult with a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon or maxillofacial surgeon. They can evaluate your facial structure, discuss your aesthetic goals, and determine if jaw implants are a suitable option for you. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with jaw implants, such as infection, implant displacement, or adverse reactions to anesthesia. Therefore, it is crucial to have a thorough understanding of the procedure and its potential risks before proceeding. Keep in mind that my knowledge is up to date only until September 2021, so there might have been advancements or changes in the field of jaw implants since then. Always consult a healthcare professional or a plastic surgeon for the latest information and personalized advice.

Esthetic Jaw Surgery

Esthetic jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to correct and enhance the functional and aesthetic aspects of the jaw and facial structures. It is often considered for individuals with misaligned jaws or severe jaw discrepancies that cannot be corrected through non-surgical treatments like braces or orthodontics alone. The procedure is typically carried out by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in collaboration with an orthodontist. The main goals of esthetic jaw surgery are to improve facial balance, correct jaw alignment, and enhance the overall appearance of the face. It can also address functional issues such as difficulties with chewing, speaking, and breathing caused by jaw misalignments. Common reasons for undergoing esthetic jaw surgery include: Malocclusion: A condition where the upper and lower jaws do not fit together correctly, resulting in an improper bite. Overbite or underbite: In an overbite, the upper jaw significantly protrudes over the lower jaw, while in an underbite, the lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw. Open bite: A gap between the upper and lower front teeth when the back teeth are clenched together. Facial asymmetry: Uneven jaw growth or positioning can lead to facial asymmetry. Jawline aesthetics: For those seeking to improve the definition and overall appearance of their jawline. Before proceeding with surgery, a thorough evaluation and assessment are performed to determine the specific issues with the jaw and face. This evaluation typically includes medical history, physical examination, dental records, facial X-rays, and 3D imaging.

TMJ Surgery

TMJ- Temporo-mandibular joint. Can be called the jaw joint. The lower jaw (mandible) is the only movable bone in our face. It is a part of this joint along with the temporal(ear) bone. Commonly Perfomed TMJ Surgeries Are Ankylosis release: A trauma or birth defect can lead to ankylosis (fusion/fixation) of the lower jaw to the temporal bone thus hindering its movement. Patients thus can’t open their mouth. Surgery is done to fracture the fusion and release the lower jaw. A long standing ankylosis can lead to severe facial disfurgement. Condylar fracture: Fracture invovling the joint portion of lower jaw. Treated surgical and non-surgically. Doctor is Well Experienced to Diagnose and Treat Such Conditions TMJ DISC surgery: Tmj joint also has a disc inside a joint capsule which allows the movement of the lower jaw. Joint diseases commonly lead to changes in the position of the disc inside the capsule leading to click noise and pain on opening the mouth. Patients are carefully evaluated to find all the causes of the joint pain and adjacent muscle pain. TMJ Disc Surgery can be done Open: A skin incision is placed and the joint is opened to perform the surgery. Endoscopic: Minimally invasive with 2-3 holes near the joint. TJR (Total TMJ Reconstruction) It involves replacing the entire joint with a prosthesis much like knee replacement. Usually the last resort for advanced tmj conditions. Dr. Karan is interested in TMJ disc surgeries and TJR and continually updates himself and undergoes training. Currently performs both open and basic endoscopic surgeries

Obstructive Sleep Apnea & OSA

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of partial or complete blockage of the upper airway during sleep, leading to disruptions in breathing. Airway Obstruction: During sleep, the muscles in the throat relax, and the soft tissues of the throat may collapse and block the airway. This obstruction can reduce or completely halt the airflow, leading to breathing pauses (apneas) or shallow breathing (hypopneas). Sleep Disruptions: The frequent breathing interruptions can disrupt the sleep cycle, causing the affected individual to wake up momentarily several times during the night. However, they might not fully remember these awakenings, leading to an impression of continuous, non-refreshing sleep. Daytime Symptoms: Due to fragmented and poor-quality sleep, individuals with OSA often experience excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. They may also suffer from morning headaches, dry mouth, and irritability. Loud Snoring: Loud and persistent snoring is a common symptom of OSA. Snoring occurs when airflow is partially obstructed, causing vibrations in the airway tissues. Risk Factors: OSA is more prevalent in individuals who are overweight or obese, have a family history of sleep apnea, or have anatomical features like a narrow airway, large neck circumference, or a recessed chin. Health Risks: Untreated OSA can contribute to several health problems, including high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and an increased risk of accidents due to daytime sleepiness. Diagnosis: The diagnosis of OSA typically involves a sleep study (polysomnography) conducted in a sleep center or home setting. This study monitors various physiological parameters during sleep, such as brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory efforts, and blood oxygen levels. Treatment: Treatment options for OSA aim to keep the airway open during sleep.
